Update on Santuit and Ashumet Ponds

Information provided by Department of Natural Resources has prompted the Board of Health to post Ashumet and Santuit Ponds as a surface scum of algae has been observed floating at several locations in each pond.  Therefore, the beaches and access points will be posted “No swimming” with an algae advisory.  We will continue to monitor the situation and update as new information is made available to us.

Also, the Sandwich Health Department has notified the Mashpee Board of Health that Peters Pond has been posted with algae advisories.  There are no Mashpee public beaches on Peters Pond but advisories will be posted to notify residents in Mashpee.

Santuit Pond : 44% Woronichinia, 54% Dolichospermum, 1 % Microcystis and 1 % Aphanizomenon. Total cell count: 72,300 cells / ml

Scum layer present at Town Landing, and Byrant’s neck county test location.

Ashumet Pond : 90 % Dolichospermum 10% Microcystis  Total cell count : To dense for an accurate count : cell count exceeds the threshold.

There is no change to advisories at Mashpee/Wakeby Pond.
