Mashpee Land Stewards Program

Welcome to the Mashpee Land Stewards Program!

This program is completely dependent on volunteers and we are always looking for more help! The Mashpee Land Stewards welcomes anyone who would like to volunteer regardless of prior experience, and volunteers can decide how active they want to be. Our volunteers become involved by being land stewards or by being specialized volunteers who participate in events. The descriptions for each can be found below. If you are interested in joining the Land Stewards Program please fill out the sign up form. Groups are also encouraged to act as a land steward or participate in events!

Land Steward’s Role:

The primary responsibility of the land steward is caretaking, “to be a presence on the land”. The steward should monitor the land regularly, assist to keep trails cleared, and support clean-up efforts when necessary. This position requires a regular time commitment from the volunteer. Land Steward activities include walking the parcels at least 4 times a year and submitting parcel evaluations that include information such as presence of trash, any invasive species noted, and how the land is being used. ** It’s important to note that volunteers will not confront anyone carrying out illegal activities and should not introduce new plantings, signs, or trails without prior permission from the Conservation Department.

Specialized Volunteers:

Specialized volunteers help with events outside the duties of the Land Stewards. This position does not require regular participation; instead, volunteers can choose to participate in events organized by Concom. These events could include invasive species removal, beautification projects, trail maintenance or creation, and debris removal.

Assistant Conservation Agent:Our Assistant Conservation Agent, Daniel Kent, manages the volunteers in Town. A graduate from Oliver Ames High School in Easton Massachusetts, he received his Bachelors of Science degree in Environmental Studies from University of Maine at Fort Kent in 2011. He comes from The Trustees, a non-profit land conservation organization, where since 2015 he has stewarded properties on the south coast of Massachusetts and Cape Cod.
