IRS Telephone Scam

The Mashpee Police Department, along with likely every other PD on Cape Cod and beyond, is receiving a quantity of phone calls from citizens regarding phone calls they are receiving from an entity claiming to be the IRS. The current calls indicate that a lawsuit is pending against the citizen and if left as a message provides a telephone number for a return phone call.

THIS IS A SCAM.  THE IRS WILL NOT CALL YOU IF YOU HAVE ACTUAL TAX PROBLEMS.  DO NOT RESPOND TO THE CALLER/MESSAGE OR PROVIDE ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION TO THEM.

While the Mashpee Police Department will take a report from you regarding this incident, it is unfortunately the extent of involvement we can offer. Provided that you have not given the caller any specific information you may safely conclude that you have not been scammed. If you have provided information to the caller, or if you require further information, you may visit this IRS webpage to obtain further information. The IRS has also set up a telephone number for persons that wish to report being scammed. It is (800) 366-4484. At this time we have called the number and been advised that a significant wait may occur due to call volume. It is suggested that you don't call this number unless you have truly been scammed by providing personal information to the caller.

FOLLOW-UP: At about 1:30 PM today (2/3/16) this automated telephone call was received on the Mashpee Police Department's 7 digit EMERGENCY line. It would appear these are automated blanket phone calls to as many telephone numbers as possible trying to catch someone off guard and having them subsequently fall for the scam. The initial phone calls are likely not targeted at specific individuals.
