Where and how frequently should I get my well-water tested?

The Board of Health recommends that residents connected to private/potable wells have their water tested annually.  Additionally, dwellings that are serviced by a potable well must have their well water sampled prior to property transfer, if it has not been sampled in the previous 12 months.

Residents may pick up water sample kits and instructions at the Board of Health office during normal business hours.  Barnstable County Department of Health & Environment will test water for $55.00.  As a courtesy, a courier will pick up water samples from our office at 9:30 a.m. every Wednesday and deliver them to the County Lab.  Those samples must be collected by the homeowner on Wednesday morning, and dropped off in our office prior to 9:00 a.m. that same day.  Water samples taken any day other than Wednesday must be delivered by the homeowner to the County Lab at 3195 Main Street, Barnstable, the same day the samples are taken.  If you prefer to have a private lab test your water, you may deliver your samples to Envirotech Laboratories, in Sandwich.  For information and pricing, please contact Envirotech directly at 508-888-6460.

Do I need a well if I have an irrigation system?

You must have a well if you have an irrigation system in the Town of Mashpee.  A list of well drillers is available on our website under “Contractors Lists”.  The well driller must apply to the Board of Health for a permit and, if the irrigation well is to be located in an area of known or anticipated PFAS contamination, the property owner will need to sign and submit an affidavit stating that they will abide by the conditions of approval.
