Recently there was a large spill of liquid, or elemental, mercury in the Town of Bourne. This situation is still unfolding but the results will be extremely costly. The spill was completely preventable. Barnstable County has collected literally over a ton of mercury in the past 15 years, through the cooperation of all 15 Cape Cod towns, the Barnstable County Hazardous Materials Program, and Covanta-Semass.
